Join Texas Commandery NOUS members and the USS HOUSTON Survivors and Next Generations Association at the USS HOUSTON and HMAS PERTH Day of Remembrance event on Saturday, March 7, at 1330 at the USS HOUSTON monument.  The event will mark the 78th Anniversary of the loss of the heavy cruiser USS HOUSTON (CA-30) and the light cruiser HMAS PERTH (D-29) during the March 1, 1942 Battle of Sunda Strait.

Representatives of the City of Houston, the Naval Order of the U.S., Britain, Australia, and the Netherlands—countries whose warships fought alongside the USS HOUSTON during WWII—are scheduled to speak at the service, which will also include a wreath-laying ceremony, the playing of “Taps,” a rifle salute, and music provided by the Community Band of Southeast Texas.  

The USS HOUSTON Monument incorporates the brass ship’s bell recovered from the wreck and placed atop a granite pedestal. It is the scene of an annual memorial for the sailors who died as a result of the USS HOUSTON sinking in the Sunda Strait, March 1, 1942, by a vastly superior Imperial Japanese Navy.  Of the 1,068 men on board, 700 died, and the survivors were used as labor on the Burma Railroad. The names of the ship's crew are written on the monument’s pedestal.

The USS HOUSTON monument is located in the Sam Houston Historical Park located where Allen Parkway merges with west edge of downtown Houston.  Best address is in the park behind the Houston Heritage Society at 1100 Bagby. 

The monument’s existence is a result of a major Texas NOUS fund raising and building effort.  It was dedicated on Veteran’s Day, November 11, 1995.

Due to the closure of the Battleship Texas, our event has moved to Seawolf Park in Galveston.  Easiest access is I-45 South, first exit after the bridge, left onto Harborside Drive, left onto Pelican Island and drive to the end of the road.

Immediately after the Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony, you are invited to join others for a no-host lunch on board the USS Stewart located on the museum grounds.  We will have a private dining area so that attending Companions and our guests, the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, will have an opportunity to meet, greet, and visit. There is limited seating for about 40 people, so this a reservation-only luncheon on a first come, first serve basis.  The lunch will be buffet-style, consisting of the following items, catered by Soul2Soul Café of Galveston:

The Texas Commandery of the Naval Order of the United States is proud to sponsor this celebration the 50th anniversary of the Navy Fighter Weapons School with CAPT Dan Pedersen, USN (ret), first Officer-in-Charge of TOPGUN. 

When American fighter jets were being downed at an unprecedented rate during the Vietnam War, the U.S. Navy turned to a young Lieutenant Commander, Dan Pedersen, to figure out a way to reverse their dark fortune. On a shoestring budget and with little support, Pedersen picked eight of the finest pilots to help train a new generation to bend jets like the F-4 Phantom to their will and learn how to dogfight all over again.

What resulted was nothing short of a revolution -- one that took young American pilots from the crucible of combat training in the California desert to the blistering skies of Vietnam, in the process raising America's Navy combat kill ratio from two enemy planes downed for every American plane lost to more than 22 to 1. TOPGUN emerged not only as an icon of America's military dominance immortalized by Hollywood but as a vital institution that would shape the nation's military strategy for generations to come.

Today, 1 Dec 2018 the Texas Commandery conducted our annual Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony aboard the Battleship Texas.

CDR Bryan Lethcoe, USN (Ret), Commander of the TCNOUS served as Master of Ceremony. Participants included the Patriot Guard Riders, Sea Scouts, USMC Honor Rifle Squad, Band of the Southeast, and the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. A five plane flyover prior to the ceremony was conducted by the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). Later during the ceremony a CAF B-25 conducted a fly by.

Guest speaker was Richard J. Stoll, Ph.D, Albert Thomas Professor of Political Science at Rice University. Dr. Stoll spoke of the role of U.S. Naval Intelligence in winning the war in the Pacific.

John Bradley, M.A., LtCOL, USA (ret.), a civilian prisoner of war of the Japanese, veteran of the Vietnam War, graduate of West Point and retired U.S. Army officer, has taught courses in U.S. history, military history, World War II and the Vietnam War at the University of Houston-Downtown and, since 2009, at the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies. He is principal author of “The Second World War: Asia and the Pacific” and its accompanying atlas. He also published the story of an American cavalry officer who perished in captivity: “Remind Me to Tell You: A History of Major Harry J. Fleeger and His Friends, POWs of the Japanese.” Mr. Bradley holds a master’s degree in history from Rice University and has taught military history at West Point. He is a graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
